This has been the border area between Hungary and Austria for centuries. A land of many castles such as the medieval border fortress Forchtenstein, the knight’s castle Lockenhaus shrouded in legend and Friedensburg Schlaining in the smallest university town in the world. This region features a unique landscape, from the gentle hills of the Alpine foothills and the pristine hill country in the south to the steppe of Lake Neusiedl, a natural spectacle afforded by rare animals and plants. The peace and tranquillity of the draw wells, steppe grass, shallow ponds, maize plants, meadows, pastures and idyllic vineyards are quite obviously also appreciated by the storks, who spend their summers here each year.
