FOURTH MINISTERIAL MEETING OF THE EU-US TTC TAKES PLACE IN SWEDEN 

On 31 May, the EU-US Trade and Technology Council (TTC) met and adopted a joint statement. The EU and U.S. also agreed on key outcomes to boost cooperation on emerging technologies, sustainable trade, economic security (amongst others). The group discussed cooperation on AI and the potential opportunities and risks associated with this. Commissioner Margrethe Vestager also announced that both sides intend to work on a voluntary code of conduct for companies working on AI to provide oversight. Additionally, a trade agreement was signed. The next meeting of the TTC is planned towards the end of the year in the US.

DMA: COMMISSION OPENS CONSULTATION ON TEMPLATE FOR COMPLIANCE REPORT 

On 6 June, the Commission opened a call for evidence for a consultationon the draft template for a compliance report that gatekeepers are required to submit under the DMA framework. The Commission’s aim was to create a template with relevant criteria to determine whether gatekeepers comply with DMA rules. The Commission will designate gatekeepers on 6 September 2023.

PLENARY DEBATES FOREIGN INTERFERENCE AND ELECTION INTEGRITY 

On 1 June, the Parliament held a joint plenary debate on foreign interference in democratic processes and election integrity. The discussion highlighted the need to address various threats, including disinformation, influence over critical infrastructure, electoral meddling, and corruption. Commissioner Věra Jourová outlined the steps being taken to protect EU democracy and the need for collaboration with platforms and the adoption of measures to limit foreign information manipulation online. The Commission said it was working on a Defence of Democracy Package to address covert foreign interference and promote engagement in public policy-making processes. The debate also acknowledged the challenges posed by new technologies, such as AI, and the need for balanced and effective responses.

EP JURI AND CULT DISCUSSES IMPLEMENTATION OF 2018 GEO-BLOCKING REGULATION 

On 24 May, the CULT Committee discussed its draft opinion on the implementation of the 2018 Geo-blocking regulation. During the meeting, the rapporteur, Sabine Verheyen, highlighted the importance of an exception for the AV media sector and the need to maintain cultural and linguistic diversity. On 30 May, the JURI Committee held a discussion on the same file. Karen Melchior (RE) pushed for a reconsideration of the draft opinion, to ensure that discrimination does not occur against minority languages and citizens who live in cross-border regions. Melchior also characterised the AV sector as a proud example of EU diversity and went on to argue for the removal of cultural barriers.

CROSS-PARLIAMENTARY AGREEMENT ON AI ACT BREAKS DOWN 

An agreement on the AI Act between four major European political parties in the Parliament appears to have broken down with each group submitting further amendments on the draft proposal. The Parliament was supposed to vote on the proposal at Plenary on 14 June.

JOINT ACTION BEST-REMAP’S FINAL POLICY DIALOGUE  

EU-level policy makers and other relevant stakeholders met in Brussels at the Slovenian Permanent Representation on 25 May to discuss with the Member States involved in the Joint Action BestReMaP, aiming at transferring the outcomes of the core work packages on food reformulation, food marketing and public food procurement, into the national and EU policies and legislation, ensuring the sustainability of the Joint Action BestReMaP results.
