It wasn't just the World Wide Web that was invented at CERN in Switzerland. One reason for its ongoing success is its innovative corporate strategy: ‘Planning for the Unknown.’ But how can this be applied to the economy? Three key takeaways from the world's most important research location:

At CERN, we try to approach problems or challenges holistically, to look at them from different angles and to solve them with international cooperation. And CERN does not want to keep this secret of success to itself, but rather brings it directly to companies in cooperation with the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (WKÖ).

At CERN, scientists are looking for exponential changes such as finding the origin of the universe. Companies, on the other hand, usually have to solve short-term or medium-term challenges. At CERN, scientists want to help companies change this mindset to thinking about the future in an exponential way and to create big changes.

The core essence can be reduced to three important points:
1. Purpose: People need purpose or vision. They need to believe that investing great effort in a project is worthwhile.
2. Commitment: Young people at CERN often work for decades on a single physics experiment. Without the necessary motivation, it won't work.
3. Tolerance: It takes people who think differently, talk differently, dress differently, but have the same passion for the same ideas.

This is an approach that can be particularly helpful in turbulent times. Because the more colourful the perspectives and the more different the people that are looking at a problem are, the bigger the chance that you will discover something in the joining of these different perspectives that you haven't seen before.

This is especially true for business issues. For example: How do we solve the question of the rapid transformation of our systems? And that's the kind of challenge that makes this open innovation approach effective, and is certainly one of the centerpieces of the cultural approach here at CERN. We can learn a lot from that example. Because the future remains unknown. And so, in this case, the solution is obvious: It almost always takes a plan for the unknown.
